Warcraft is a franchise of video games, novels, and other media originally created by Blizzard Entertainment. The series is made up of three real-time strategy (RTS) games where opposing players command virtual armies in battle against each other or a computer-controlled enemy and includes, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness and its expansion Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal and Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. The last and best selling title of the franchise is the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft and its eight expansions, The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Warlords of Draenor, Legion, Battle for Azeroth, and Shadowlands. A spin off online card game, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, was released which features elements from World of Warcraft; it was later renamed to just Hearthstone.
The series also resulted in the publishing of several books relevant to the Warcraft universe setting, covering a wide range of the timelines of the universe. A collectable card game was also published, which offered those who bought booster packs a chance to gain access codes to limited in-game content in World of Warcraft. An upcoming film adaptation is planned. A number of comics have also been released alongside the books, further covering parts of the universe's storyline. A short-lived, online-subscription only magazine was also available, but later ceased publication after just 5 issues.
Story[ | ]
Warcraft is set mainly on the high-fantasy world of Azeroth, a planet the demonic Burning Legion sought to destroy. To accomplish that, they corrupted a peaceful nomadic species called the orcs, from the world of Draenor, and turned them into a bloodthirsty Horde. The orcs invaded the Eastern Kingdoms through a dark portal between their worlds, and raised the capital of Stormwind to the ground. The survivors fled to the kingdom of Lordaeron, where they formed an Alliance between their nations as well as the dwarves and high elves, successfully defeated the Horde. Through demonic magic, the orcs' mad leaders tore Draenor apart, transforming it into the shattered world of Outland.
On Azeroth, the remaining orcs would rally under a wise leader, Thrall, who led them across the sea to a lost continent known as Kalimdor. The orcs would later defeat the demon Mannoroth, freeing them from their unholy bloodthirst. Meanwhile, the Burning Legion attacked Azeroth again, this time using a plague that turned the living into mindless undead. Arthas, the prince of Lordaeron, became more and more desperate to stop the undead, eventually forsaking his humanity and becoming a pawn of Scourge, before finally merging with The Lich King.
The champions of Azeroth have dealt with many threats since, from Ragnaros the Firelord, to Garrosh Hellscream's fanatical Iron Horde, the ever-corrupting whispers of the Old Gods. All the while, the uneasy tension between the Alliance and Horde threatens to snap at any minute and plunge Azeroth into war once again.
