Murky, the Baby Murloc, is a Melee Assassin Hero from the Warcraft universe.

Murky slimes enemies and spits out Pufferfish. Murky can place an Egg to respawn quickly back into battle.

Background[]

Warcraft This section concerns content exclusive to the Warcraft universe.

The origins and history of the murloc race are shrouded in mystery. A large part of this is because their lore is passed down via their own oral tradition, which is almost incomprehensible to most other sentient races, but also because murlocs generally have very little tolerance for other races. Murlocs often congregate in heavily populated coastal settlements, and are more than willing to assist each other when threatened. While many have debated on their intelligence, there is reason to believe that their use of weaponry and uncanny fighting abilities may actually imply that they possess a rather sinister racial intellect.

Like the enigmatic origins of the murloc race, Murky's past is also veiled in a variety unanswered questions. Who is he? Where does he come from? He dies again and again, and yet each time, returns to life from his egg. Stranger yet, when he emerges, he looks and sounds precisely the same. Does he possess unspeakable powers? Could he be immortal?

The world may never know.

Gameplay[]

Murky is a Melee Assassin who excels at frustrating his opponents.Uniquely designed, he is adept at attracting the attention of enemy players, causing them to behave inefficiently to respond to his abrasive presence. Even if his Health and damage values are limited, his Hero Trait, Spawn Egg, makes it so that he is never away from battle for long when killed. Another important aspect of Spawn Egg to consider is the fact that Murky's revival timer is of only 8 seconds at all stages of the game. Early on, this advantage is mediocre; later in the game, it is outstanding.

Strengths[]

  • Good waveclear
  • Strong revival mechanic
  • Very threatening late-game presence

Weaknesses[]

  • Extremely fragile
  • Inept at carrying Map Objectives, which are dropped on death
  • Several conditions may limit his damage potential
  • Underwhelming early-game
  • Distinct playstyle to which your team must adapt

Abilities[]

See Data page for a table of scaled values at key levels.

Development[]

According to Game Designer Kent-Erik Hagman the development of Murky revolved around the idea of Murlocs being a persistent, annoying force that just die a lot. Credit for the core idea does belong to Dustin Browder. The developers had been spinning their wheels for a while trying to come up with a cool hook for Murky when Dustin Browder suggested to try the "cartoon character" Murloc, for whom death doesn't mean anything. They decided the most straightforward approach would be for the Murky player to pick the respawn spot. They wanted to offer the most freedom for their players, and after talking with the art team, they gave them the idea of a Murloc Egg or Nest that Murky could respawn from. From there, it was just a lot of playtesting and reworking the numbers to get the egg to feel exciting and fun.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Murlocs first appeared in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (July 2002). A Murky pet was added to World of Warcraft in 2005, and Murky appears in World of Warcraft: Legion (August 2016).
  • Murky is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker.
  • Murky was one of the four heroes revealed at PAX East 2014.[2]
  • Murky originally lived in the coast of Feralas in Traveler (October 2016).
    • However, he was kidnapped by a band of thugs and held captive, but was later rescued by a pair of children and a wyvern the size of a giraffe.
  • Many of the opening lines involving Murky are expressions of confusion at the murloc language. Even Malfurion mentions he has to brush up on it. Certain heroes, notably the telepathic protoss and the supernatural angels and demons, are able to understand what Murky is saying. The more noble of these (Tassadar, Zeratul, Fenix, Tyrael, and Auriel) react as either offended or scared of the little Murloc's bloodthirsty demeanor and desire for vengeance. Even Diablo is a little scared of him. On the other hand, Alarak actually likes the "little fish creature", and Malthael is flat out impressed to find someone who understands his "great work".
