Mounts are a gameplay mechanic which enables Heroes to move quickly through the Battleground. Players can choose a different visual appearace for their Hero's mount before entering the game.
Mounts in gameplay[ | ]
Heroes mount by pressing the 'Z' key, causing them to channel in place for 1 second, and start riding their mount. While mounted, Heroes receive a 30% boost to their Movement Speed, which allows them to cross the Battleground or get to Objectives quickly.
Taking damage, attacking, or using most Abilities will interrupt the channel and dismount a mounted Hero immediately, effectively preventing the use of mounts in combat. Dismounting, when a Hero is successfully mounted, places mount on a 4 second cooldown. Mounting is instant and has no cooldown as long as the Hero remains in the Hall of Storms.
Toggle Abilities, like Fenix's Weapon Mode, and some active Traits and Abilities, such as Azmodan's Demon Lieutenant and Gul'dan's Life Tap, can be used without dismounting the Hero. There is no clear rule, however, which non-toggleable Abilities can be used without dismounting.
Special Mounts[ | ]
Some Heroes have their mount button function changed. They cannot use any standard mounts (except D.Va, who uses a regular mount while in Pilot Mode, and Gall, who chooses the mount that Cho uses).
- Abathur's "Deep Tunnel" lets him channel to tunnel to any visible location. 30s cooldown.
- Brightwing's "Phase Shift" lets her channel to teleport to any allied Hero, healing them on arrival. 40s cooldown.
- D.Va's "Mechanized Walker" passively lets her attack while moving but reduces her movement speed by 25% while attacking or channeling an ability. In Pilot mode, she uses a regular mount.
- Deathwing's "Dragonflight" lets him channel to fly off the map, recovering lost Health and Armor Plates while flying, and can be reactivated to land in any visible location. 45s cooldown.
- Dehaka's "Brushstalker" passively increases his movement speed by 20% for 2 seconds whenever he enters a Bush and can be activated to tunnel to any Bush on the battlefield. 75s cooldown.
- Falstad's "Flight" lets him channel to Launch to a target location within a large range. 75s cooldown.
- Gall's "Shove" lets him shove Cho a short distance and increases Cho's movement speed by 25% for 2 seconds. 30s cooldown.
- The Lost Vikings' "Go Go Go!" increases the movement speed of every Viking by 30% for 4 seconds. 30s cooldown.
- LĆŗcio's "Wall Ride" passively increases his movement speed by 20% while riding on terrain, which stacks with other bonuses.
- Lunara's "Dryad's Swiftness" passively increases her movement speed by 20% at all times.
- Medivh's "Raven Form" moves at 20% bonus speed but makes him Invulnerable and able to pass over terrain.
- Probius' "Worker Rush" passively increases his movement speed by 10% and can be activated to boost it to 60% for 5 seconds, but the bonus is lost if he takes damage. 30s cooldown.
- Rehgar's "Ghost Wolf" moves at 20% bonus speed but has an instant cast time, is not canceled by taking damage, and also makes his Basic Attack lunge at the target for bonus damage.
- Sgt. Hammer's "Thrusters" increases her movement speed by 60% for 4 seconds and instantly cancels Siege Mode upon use. 30s cooldown.
[ | ]
- Cassia's level 13 "War Traveler" makes mounting instant while Avoidance is fully charged.
- Genji's level 1 "Agile Dismount" increases the range and lowers the cooldown of Cyber Agility while mounted.
- Hanzo's level 13 "Mounted Archery" grants 25% Movement Speed for 3 seconds when mounting and causes Natural Agility to instantly mount him.
- Johanna's level 7 "Steed Charge" can be activated to instantly mount and make it unbreakable by damage for 3 seconds.
- Junkrat's level 20 "I Hate Waiting!" permanently replaces his mount with a rocket that moves at 150% speed, but increases his mount cooldown to 8 seconds.
- Malthael's level 1 "On a Pale Horse" increases mount speed by 20%.
- Raynor's level 13 "Giddy-Up" increases mount speed by 10%.
- Yrel's level 7 "Divine Steed" makes her mount instant and grants 60% bonus movement speed, decaying over 3 seconds, when mounting.
Mounts as cosmetic items[ | ]
Players can assign different mounts to their Heroes before a match in their Loadout while hovering the Hero in Quick Match Hero selection or Draft lobby. There are many different types of mounts in the game, which can be obtained either by purchase from Collection, as drops from Loot Chest by promotional means or as a reward for completing quests during Events or Storm League. Three color variations of Horse and Battle Beast mounts are available to players from the start.
A couple of Heroes have a Hero-specific mount, and cannot equip other mounts or are only able to equip certain types of Mounts: Ragnaros, Kel'thuzad and Mephisto, as well as Heroes with a special mount Ability are limited to use their one Hero specific mount that functions the same as a regular mount. Additionally, a few non-humanoid Heroes, including Alarak, Azmodan, Zagara, Fenix, and Anub'arak, are restricted to using mounts that are in the "Magical" category in addition to their Hero-specific mount. Some skins also come with a themed mount exclusive to them.
Players can view all mounts owned by them and all mounts currently available for purchase in Collection. Mounts tied to limited time sales or seasonal events can only be seen for purchase during their season or sale, and mounts tied to promotions and rewards can only be viewed in the Collection, if they are owned by the player.

Trivia[ | ]
- The idea for mounts came from Thrall, where, in early development, he was given a Cyber Wolf to ride in order to distinguish him from Za'Muro which sparked the idea of the use of mounts in general.[2] Originally, each hero had their own mount. For instance, Kerrigan used a Zergling.[3]
- Mounts are a feature of World of Warcraft. Mounts taken from the game include horses and wolves.
- The Cyber Wolves bear resemblance to the predators of the StarCraft setting, albeit being canine instead of feline.
- The Rainbow Unicorns harken to the unicorns found in the secret Whimsyshire level of the Diablo series.
