Abathur, the Evolution Master, is a melee specialist hero from the StarCraft universe.[1] Abathur, the Evolution Master of Kerrigan's Swarm, works ceaselessly to improve the zerg from the genetic level up.

Abathur does not directly engage in combat, but rather can act through his allied Heroes and Minions and place Toxic Nests to defend important locations.[2]

Background

StarCraft This section concerns content exclusive to the StarCraft universe.

From their conception, the zerg have been driven to pursue the perfection of their race through merciless, predatory evolution. If the Overmind has been the force behind this directive, the being known as Abathur was born as the instrument of its will.

Abathur is an old organism, long serving as an “evolution master” – a guiding hand spinning the strands of zerg DNA into mutations of existing zerg and entirely new strains. Left to its own devices, Abathur’s approach to evolving the Swarm is unorthodox: consuming living tissue, and dissolving it into genetic components able to be quickly reassembled (often painfully).

Abathur’s methods are far from the only means of evolving the Swarm, but the creature has refined them over years of wanderlust following the death of the original zerg Overmind. During its time on Char, the detached, meticulous Abathur modified any zerg it stumbled across, and grew fixated on diversifying the Swarm.

As much as a hive creature can, Abathur sees itself as personally responsible for the continuation of the zerg. It undertakes each experiment as though the survival of the species depended on it alone, and tolerates no evolutionary backstep. Abathur will push the swarm forward... and change it utterly in the attempt.

  • Upon successfully casting Ultimate Evolution, Abathur is put in Stasis for its duration. In addition to usual effects of Stasis, Abathur is removed from ground plane (disjoints certain projectiles), has no collision, cannot regenerate Health, Mana, Energy or Shields and cannot be seen on the minimap or revealed.
  • Abathur returns to the same location where he cast Ultimate Evolution once it ends.

  • Ultimate Evolution Clone is untalented and does not inherit any progress on baseline quests.
  • It is possible to complete baseline quests on the Clone, but any progress and rewards are reset for the next cast.
  • Clone does not gain Ability effects that are unlocked by reaching a certain level, such as Muradin's Storm Bolt pierce.
  • Clone can Mount, use the Healing Fountain and can benefit from, but not directly collect, Regeneration Globes.
  • The Clone can fake channeling Objectives, but it cannot complete the channel to capture the Objective.
  • The Clone's Summons, including Junkrat's traps, Probius's Warp Rifts and Pylons, Lunara's Wisps, and Nova's Holo Decoys do not expire when the Clone expires or is destroyed. However, Misha and Samuro's Images exceptionally do expire.
  • There are some limitations and exceptions to cloning certain Heroes:
    - Deathwing cannot be cloned due to his Trait.
    - Cloning Cho'gall only grants access to Cho's Abilities.
    - Cloning a Viking only clones the specific Viking targeted.
    - D.Va's clone can only use the form she was cloned from. Pilot D.Va's Call Mech is disabled, and activating Self-Destruct in Mech mode immediately returns control to Abathur, leaving the exploding Mech on the Battleground. Additionally, if Ultimate Evolution expires during this time, the Mech will instantly explode as it does.
    - Kharazim's level 1 Talent is inherited, as it is his Trait.
    - Murky's Trait, Spawn Egg, is disabled.
    - Alexstrasza's and Ragnaros's Traits start on full cooldown every time they are copied, making it impossible to use Molten Core and Dragonqueen during the clone's lifetime.
    - The effects of Jaina's Frostbite, Malthael's Reaper's Mark, Murky's Slime, Sylvanas's Banshee's Curse, Tassadar's Psionic Storm, and Zagara's Creep Tumor do not stack and are instead shared, benefiting both the clone and the cloned Hero regardless of who applied the effect.
    - Qhira and her Clone can both apply their own instance of Bleed from Blood Rage. However, only the unit who placed the first Bleed stack on the unit may activate Blood Rage on it. Additionally, the stack count and duration are shared among all Bleeds on the target, allowing both Qhira and Abathur to instantly gain the current stack count on the target and increment and extend each other's Bleed stacks on the target. Bleeds placed by the Clone also remain even after when the Clone has expired.
    - Both Probius and his Ultimate Evolution Clone can fully interact with each other's Pylons and Warp Rifts.
  • The Clone grants no XP or Takedown credit on death.
  • The Clone's Summons do not benefit from this Ability's Spell Power bonus.
  • Attack Damage and Spell Power bonuses stack additively with offensive damage modifiers and healing dealt modifiers.

Using Symbiote on the Monstrosity allows Abathur to control it, in addition to Symbiote's normal benefits. This Ability can be reactivated to automatically cast Symbiote on his Monstrosity.

Trivia

  • Abathur first appeared in StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm (2013).
  • Abathur is voiced by Steve Blum.
  • Abathur was one of the 18 heroes revealed at BlizzCon 2013.
  • Abathur is a new type of hero that won't be found in the thick of a fight himself.[3] Instead, he’s behind the scenes, manipulating the battlefield a little bit at a time in many places. In doing so, he can help his team secure big advantages and shape the flow of battle.
  • Heart of the Swarm implied that Abathur was a huge worm-like creature players only ever saw the top of, which wasn't really viable in Heroes. The art team shortened him down so he could scoot around the battlefield.[4][5]
  • Players end up not actually looking at Abathur much while playing him (and the enemy sees him even less), so Blizzard made sure his skins modified his symbiotes and locusts as well as his model.[4][5]
  • One of Abathur's gag quotes references the song Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk, a punk rock, eloctronic music duo that originated in northern France in 1993.
  • The original inspiration behind Abathur was the Overmind with global powers and immobility. The kit evolved to be more mobile to add a dimension both to his strategic location and to give him more personality (he is rarely present on the map instead of never there), and Blizzard mapped/adjusted powers to Abathur instead.[6]
